The Detroit Tigers are one of the oldest teams in all of Major League Baseball. Since their inception as one of the first teams in the American League, the Detroit Tigers have had a storied tradition. They have had many hall-of-fame players in their history including the great Al Kaline, Hank Greenberg and Ty Cobb. They have won multiple championships in their history, including their most recent in 1984 under head coach Sparky Anderson. That team was led by outfielder Kirk Gibson and steady middle infielders, Lou Whitiker, and Alan Trammel.
The team now plays in the American League Central Division, against such rivals as the Minnesota Twins, the Chicago White Sox, and the Kansas City Royals. The current team is managed by the aforementioned Alan Trammel. Trammel is a first time manager, but hopes to instill the fiery spirit he played with in the current group of Detroit Tigers. This group is young and looking to continue improvement under Trammel's guidance. The team is led by hard-hitting outfielders Dmitri Young and Bobby Higginson, as well as veteran infielder Fernando Vina.
The Tigers had played in legendary Tiger Stadium since early in the 1900s but in 2000 they moved into their brand new stadium, Comerica Park. Comerica Park is best known for its cavernous outfield that makes games at Comerica Park exciting because of the amount of doubles and triples that can be hit there. Comerica also has a ferris wheel, a mammoth water feature in center field that can be choreographed to any music, and a decade-by-decade pedestrian museum enveloping the main concourse. There are no outfield upper deck seats, which provide people with tickets to Tigers games a beautiful view of downtown Detroit.
Seats to baseball games at Comerica Park are available in 16 different price ranges. This amount of diversity allows for anyone looking for a ticket to a Tigers' game the opportunity to find a seat that fits his or her price range. Tigers' fans and personnel are hoping that moving into Comerica Park will help give the Tigers the financial wherewithal to compete in the American League Central.
The Detroit Tigers, though, are by no means the only game in town in Detroit, Michigan. Detroit has a long and storied sports history in all the major sports. The Detroit Lions of the NFL were one of original teams and won multiple championships in the NFL's early years behind the quarterback play of Bobby Lane and the running of Doak Walker. The Lions are currently coached by Steve Mariuchi, and play in the brand new Ford Field, after playing many years in the Silver Dome. The Detroit Pistons of the NBA are always competitive in the central division of the eastern conference, including winning back to back championships in 1989 and 1990; those teams were coached by Chuck Daily, and were nicknamed "the bad boys" for their hard nosed playing style. They were lead by their backcourt of Isaiah Thomas and Joe Dumars, as well as the punishing front court of Bill Lambier, Rick Mahorn, and Dennis Rodman. They currently play at The Palace at Auburn Hills. The Detroit Redwings play their games at Joe Louis Arena and are one of the most storied franchises in the NHL, having won multiple championships in the recent years.
The Tigers should be a competitive team in the future playing exciting baseball at Comerica Park.
