The Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia has been going on for well over six decades and is widely considered to be the premier golf tournament in the United States. It is a four-day tournament, with 18 holes played each day and no qualifying rounds. The tournament was originally called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, but the name changed in 1940 when Clifford Roberts, one of the owners of the Augusta National Course, finally got his way and was able to change the name to simply "The Masters".

The tournament is always played at Augusta National, in Augusta, Georgia. Bob Jones dreamed of a course that would take advantage of the natural landscape of the area, and create beauty that all could behold. He found the perfect land in Augusta and hired Scottish golf-course architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie to design the course. The longest hole is #2, with its 575 yards and a par 5. It is said to be very difficult, but perhaps not as difficult as hole 13, with its water-hazard protected green.

The Masters was first televised in 1956, but only for the last three holes of the course. In 1967, the Masters was televised for the first time overseas, when the BBC used satellite to transmit it to millions of viewers around the world.

Jack Nicklaus has won the Masters six times in total, starting in the 1960's, and with his last win in 1986. Tiger Woods won the tournament in 1997, at the same time tallying the lowest total score ever for the four-day tournament. Gary Player has participated in 45 of the last 46 Masters Tournaments and is also the oldest person to both start and finish the tournament.

The beautiful trophy for the Masters Tournament is a silver replica of the Augusta Clubhouse. Each winner of the tournament gets his name engraved on the trophy, as well as a sterling silver replica of the trophy to keep, a gold metal, and a green jacket. Other prizes include pieces of crystal for such things as a hole-in-one, a double eagle, or the daily low score.

The Masters is really a tournament for the golfers themselves. No one but the golfers and their caddies are allowed on the course during play. The course itself is loved throughout the world by golf-enthusiasts. Many of the golfers have gone on from the Masters to win such events as the U.S. Open (Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player), the Curtis Cup, and the U.S. Senior Open. Others, such as Jimmy Demaret, Nick Faldo, and Sam Snead, have gained recognition by winning "just" The Masters tournament multiple times.
