Ok, so the 2007-08 season wasn’t the return to glory the Sacramento Kings had hoped for, but their fourth place finish in the Pacific Division was a step up from the season before! And yes, they lost some experienced players when Ron Artest was traded to the Houston Rockets, Mike Bibby was traded to the Atlanta Hawks and Shareef Abdur-Rahim was forced into retirement by a knee injury, but that just frees up space for young, healthy players to step up. For the 2008-09 season, the Kings are counting on young phenom Kevin Martin to lead them to the playoffs, and he’s got veterans Brad Miller and the newly re-acquired Bobby Jackson to back him up. With only four players on the roster over 30, the Kings are a young team that should only improve with time. Get your tickets to Arco Arena and watch these young stars lead the team to success in the 2008-09 season!
The Sacramento Kings were one of the original 17 organizations to first make up the NBA, and they have made their home in Sacramento since 1985. The Kings were a powerhouse team in the 40's and 50's, when they were known as the Cincinnati Royals, and they won their only NBA Championship in the 1950-1951 season. The Kings have had some great players over the years, including Oscar Robertson, Nate "Tiny" Archibald, and Jack Twyman, but they fell under the radar during the 80's and 90's. Today, the Kings are a team on the rise. In recent years, the Sacramento Kings have returned to prominence, and they are once again a major power in the Western Conference. Former coach Rick Adelman developed the team into a high-powered offense, and he led the Kings to consecutive winning seasons when he came over in 1998.
Previous Kings players include Archibald, Bob Davies, Maurice Stokes, Robertson, Jerry Lucas, Happy Hairston, Twyman, Red Holzman, Dolly King, and Sam Lacey -- as well as pro quarterback Otto Graham, major league catcher Del Rice, and Chuck Connors, who would go on to greater fame as The Rifleman. The Kings have also retired jersey #6 in honor of (Sixth Man) Fans. Previous coaches include Bob Cousy, Cotton Fitzsimmons, Red Holzman, and Bill Russell.
Will this be the year the Sacramento Kings finally break out and claim their first NBA Championship in over fifty years? Will they overcome their bitter rivals the L.A. Lakers and claim supremacy in the state of California? Be sure to catch a home game in the rowdy Arco Arena this year, because you don't want to miss any of what is sure to be a great season.
