Ultimate Fighting Championship History

The UFC, also known as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, is currently the largest and most established mixed martial arts promotional company in the entire world. Currently the UFC hosts sponsors many of the highest ranked fighters in the entire sport. Today, the UFC is also responsible for producing different martial-arts related events around the world. The first ever UFC event took place in Denver, Colorado in 1993. This initial event was put in place to help identify the most effective form of martial arts in real fighting settings. The event brought together different fighters who specialized in different fighting styles from Tae Kwon Do, boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling, Jujutsu and karate and beyond. From there, the event morphed into showcases where fighters would start adopting the most effective techniques from different disciplines. This helped to create what is now known as modern day mixed martial arts.

The UFC is currently based in the United States, where a majority of the events for the organization take place. The current structure of the organization includes eight different weight divisions. The UFC operates under and enforces the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts at all of their events, for safety and continuity purposes. Since it was first established, UFC has taken off tremendously in the market thanks to the continued popularity of their events as well as their cable-television deals. These television deals have helped the UFC expand into a number of new markets within the US as well as countries such as Canada, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East.

Beginning in 2001, the UFC started showcasing their programs on pay-per-view television, broadcasting the program into not only the United States but into countries such as Brazil, Canada, Australia, Italy and New Zealand. Now UFC television programming is also shown on channels such as Fuel TV, FX and Fox and on ESPN. These programs are shown frequently in 150 different countries and are broadcast in 22 different languages across the globe, which is just a small indication of how popular this mixed martial arts fighting program has truly become around the globe.
