Born in New York and raised on Long Island, Rosie started her stand-up career on the East Coast and was well received for her heavy New York accent and tomboy personality. O'Donnell's first television appearance was on the show Gimme a Break in 1986, after which she did host work for VH1 and ultimately landed a movie part in 1992 in the form of her character Doris Murphy in A League of Their Own. She went on to do a variety of other films, including Sleepless in Seattle, Beautiful Girls, and Harriet the Spy.

The long list of Rosie O'Donnell's television stints most notably includes appearances on 'Will & Grace,' 'Judging Amy' and 'The Practice,' O'Donnell as well as hosting 'Saturday Night Live.' Her own daytime show, 'The Rosie O'Donnell Show' won several Emmy Awards during its run from 1996 to 2002.
