Tim was born 'Thomas Daniel Conway' on December 15, 1933, and grew up in Chagrin Falls, Ohio; he often draws on this unfortunately named town in many of his comedy routines. After high school, Conway attended Bowling Green State University where he majored in speech and radio. Soon after, he joined up with the Eighth Army Assignment Team. One of Conway's most famous characters is based on his experiences in the army, and a lot of his stand-up is also based on his military experience.
Tim's military career was short-lived, and he finally got a job that held his interest: answering mail for a radio deejay in Cleveland, Ohio. His letters were so funny he was promoted to a writer and later became a director and recurring guest of the small-scale TV show Ernie's Place.
Conway's first big break came when comedienne Rose Marie saw his act in 1961: she was incredibly impressed and arranged an audition for The Steve Allen Show. Allen thought Conway was hilarious, so he soon became a regular on the show. It was at this point that Conway decided to change his name from 'Tom' to 'Tim' in order to avoid confusion with the famous British actor Tom Conway.
