The band formed in Glasgow, Scotland. Its members are Nick McCarthy (guitarist), Bob Hardy (bassist), Paul Thompson (drummer) and Alex Kapranos (singer/guitarist). When they released the single 'Take Me Out' it became popular all over the world including in the US. Other songs like 'Michael,' 'The Dark of the Matinee,' 'This Fire' and 'Darts of Pleasure' were all top ten hits in the UK.

Franz Ferdinand's self-titled first album opened at number three on the UK charts and won the Mercury Music Prize, a yearly award for the best British or Irish album, in 2004. Their single 'Take Me Out' finally reached 32 on the Billboard charts after the wide circulation of the critically acclaimed video for the song.

They have toured feverishly and have become very popular with concert-goers for their dark mix of brooding melodies and witty lyrics.
