Alejandro Sanz was born in 1968 in Madrid, Spain. His father was a professional guitarist who played with stars, including Manolo Escobar and Lola Flores. He was a mediocre trade-school student and carried his guitar practically everywhere, starting the day he received it at age seven. Sanz played at local parish functions in the working-class Madrid neighborhoods where he lived and later took the path of most starting musicians playing small bars and clubs.

His big break came when he met manager Miguel Angel Arenas in 1987. Arenas, who had helped launch the career of the Spanish super-group Mecano, got Sanz a job as a recording artist. Sanz was able to make his first solo record in 1989, a techno-influenced flamenco album entitled Los Chulos Son Pa Cuidarlos. It is now a collector's item, with copies reportedly selling for up to $1500.
At the beginning of his career, Sanz was categorized merely as a pop sensation. Concert tours to promote his albums Viviendo Deprisa released in 1991, Si Tú Me Miras (his follow up in 1993), and 3 which followed in 1995 were characterized by hysterically screaming pre-teen and teenage girls and a couple handfuls of fainting spectators. It didn't take long for Sanz to realize he needed to broaden his audience base.
His songwriting began to show increased maturity, which caught the ears of an older and more mature audience. His next album Más sold over two million copies in Spain and three million more worldwide making it the most successful Spanish pop album ever. The number one hit song, 'Corazón Partío', or 'Broken Heart', boosted the album's sales.
