Jarreau was born in 1940 in Wisconsin. He is the son of a vicar and started becoming involved in music as a part of the church choir. He went on to study for a master's degree in psychology and became a social worker. Al then moved to Los Angeles and began playing music again in small venues all over the West Coast.
In 1975 he put out his first successful album, We Got By. This hit awarded him comparison to the likes of Johnny Mathis and proved to be his first crossover sensation. In 1976 and 1977, he released two more albums. Look To The Rainbow, 1977, was the most jazz-oriented of his albums and showcased Jarreau's acclaimed scat-style singing. His live shows began to attract a wider audience as his music was played on a greater variety of radio stations.
A few years later, Al hit the top of the charts with his most memorable single, 'We're In This Love Together.' Following it up with the popular theme to the TV show Moonlighting, then very well-received albums in a row, Al's live performances began to garner even more attention. If you are a lover of jazz or any other adult contemporary genre, Al Jarreau's concerts are a must-see. Buy tickets to see this legend in person and you will fall in love all over again with America's mellow master.
