Amy Grant

2008 Amy Grant

Amy Lee Grant was born in Augusta, Georgia on November 25th, 1960. Amy was the youngest of four daughters who grew up in a household full of love and religious faith. She was inspired by the church music she loved, and began writing songs and playing guitar while studying at one of Nashville's ritziest private schools. She began composing religious songs at the age of 17, and even recorded some of these songs in a studio as a gift for her family. The tape made it to Word Records, and Grant soon had a recording contract. Her self-titled debut album was released in 1977, as she was graduating from high school and heading off to college. Throughout her college years, the young singer-songwriter spent any free time she had touring the country playing her music.

In 1982, Grant married her guitarist Gary Chapman who was also the writer of her hit song, "My Father's Eyes." The next year marked a huge accomplishment in Grant's life when she won a Grammy Award for her album Age to Age. The album was the first Christian music record to ever go platinum and by 1985 the talented musician had won three Grammys.

She was still rather unknown outside of the Christian community but that changed with the release of her next album Heart in Motion, which included "Baby, Baby," the hit song that received a Grammy nomination in the pop category. Heart in Motion spent 52 weeks on the U.S. Billboard charts, was certified platinum, and produced three more top ten hits with 'Every Heartbeat,' 'That's What Love Is For' and 'Good For Me'. Crossing over into pop greatly improved Amy's national sales and secured her position as a star.

Keith Thomas and Michael Omartian, long-term collaborators, were ready and in place for Grant's follow up album House of Love. The album featured the hit single 'Lucky One,' a cover version of Joni Mitchell's 'Big Yellow Taxi,' and a title track duet with Vince Gill. Amy Grant then released Behind The Eyes in 1997, giving her a gigantic boost in credibility. The deep look into her life and her love dispelled the perception of her as just another pop diva. Some of her longtime fans criticized her for crossing over into the mainstream, and some of those people were even more bothered when Grant filed for divorce from her husband of 17 years and began spending more time with country star Vince Gill.

The two fell in love, married the next year and had a child in 2001. To mark her 25th anniversary in the music industry, Grant put out an album called Legacy...Hymns & Faith. Throughout her career, Amy has gathered up a good amount of awards. To date she has received Grammy awards for Best Contemporary Album and Best Gospel Performance. She has also won over 15 Dove awards for categories like Pop/Contemporary Album, Song Of The Year, Short Form Music Video and Artist Of The Year. She continues to tour in promotion of her work and her love of bringing her music to live audiences across the globe.
