Guomundsdottir, known as Bjork, is an Icelandic musician. Bjork was born in Reykjavik, Iceland, and began her music career at age eleven, studying classical piano in elementary school. After one of her teachers sent a recording of her singing “I Love to Love” to the national radio station of Iceland and it was played across the country, Bjork was contacted by a representative of the record label Falkinn and was signed to her first record contract. Her first album, Bjork, was recorded and subsequently released in 1977.
Throughout the 1980s, Bjork joined a number of groups, including forming the all-girl punk band Spit and Snot, and the jazz fusion group Exodus. Later on, she formed the group KUKL, and began to develop her vocal style that would become prevalent in her solo records. Bjork then joined the group The Sugarcubes, before setting out on her own.
The Sugarcubes disbanded in 1992, and in 1993, released Debut, her first solo record in 16 years. Debut peaked at number three in the UK, and was certified platinum twice over. She followed that up two years later with Post, which peaked at number two in the United Kingdom, and was certified platinum in both the United Kingdom and in the United States. Homogenic came two years after that, and her success continued, with the album peaking at number four in the United Kingdom, and number 28 in the United States.
Bjork has released four albums in the 21st century, starting with 2001’s Vespertine, which reached the number one spot in two different countries. 2004’s Medulla came next and also reached the top spot in one country, and peaked at number nine in the United Kingdom. 2007’s Volta was Bjork’s first album to reach the top-10 on the Billboard 200, and peaked at number seven in the United Kingdom. Her most recent release, 2011’s Biophilia, was her first solo record since 1977 to not reach the top-10 on the United Kingdom’s Top Albums chart.
Bjork has been nominated for an astounding 51 awards, taking home 15. She has won four Brit Awards, has been nominated for twelve Grammy Awards; however, she has yet to win one. She has won four MTV Video Music Awards and has been nominated for eighteen. Bjork has also been nominated for one Oscar and two Golden Globes. Bjork won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her work in Dancer in the Dark.
