The Eagles formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1971. Musicians taken from singer Linda Ronstadt's group formed the successful ensemble. The original four members included Bernie Leadon on guitar and vocals, Randy Meisner on bass and vocals, Glenn Frey on guitar and vocals and Don Henely on drums and vocals. Such pedigrees ensured interest in the new group, which was signed immediately to David Geffen's Asylum Records label.

The Eagles recorded 'Take It Easy', which was written by Frey and Jackson Browne, and 'Witchy Woman', both of which reached the U.S. Top 20 and established the group's harmonious country-rock sound. Their first release, Desperado, firmly established the band as leaders in their field and contained several of their most popular songs, including the pleadingly emotional title track.
The follow-up, On The Border, reassured the group's commercial success. 'Best Of My Love' became their first U.S. number one while new member Don Felder was added to the group's sound. The Eagles reached superstar status with One Of These Nights, as the title track topped the U.S. charts. The platinum-selling album included 'Lyin' Eyes', which is now considered a standard on Gold format radio, and the classic 'Take It To The Limit'. The album also helped the group reach international ground with each of these tracks reaching the UK Top 30. The newfound pressure of success proved too great for Leadon who left the line-up in December 1975.
