Eminem, born Marshall Mathers III, is one of the most successful and established rap artists in popular music today. The singer, actor and songwriter is often known by his alter ego name Slim Shady and for his work in the group D12. Throughout his career, Eminem has been known for pushing boundaries and for his controversial lyrics and messages, he has also been praised for his unique writing ability that is often considered incomparable to any other artist in the industry. Rolling Stone has rated Eminem as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and he is the best selling artist of the 2000s. With accolades such as this to his name there is no arguing the influence that Eminem has had on popular music to date.
With a long and successful career behind him, Eminem has not only earned critical praise for his work but he has also racked up impressive album sales. The rapper has had ten different number one albums on the Billboard 200 charts and sold more than 115 million albums and singles worldwide. In a report issued in June of 2014, it was revealed that Eminem is the second best selling male artist of the Nielsen Soundscan era. The report also indicated that the controversial performed is the sixth best selling artist in the United States and the number one best selling hip hop artist of all time.
Eminem released his debut album in 1996, with a record called Infinite, however the rapper first entered the mainstream industry in 1999 with his sophomore effort The Slim Shady LP. This record would go one to earn the singer international success as well as a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Eminem also earned a Grammy Award for The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show, which made him the first artist to win best album awards for three consecutive records. To date, the rapper has 13 Grammy Awards to his name. In 2005, the singer went on a hiatus after touring and in 2009 released a successful album Relapse, then in 2010, his record Recovery went on to be the best selling album of that year.
