Furthur is a band founded by Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, formerly of the Grateful Dead, in 2009. The band was originally comprised of Lesh and Weir, as well as John Kadlecik, Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane, and Joe Russo. Lane has since left the band and Sunshine Becker and Jeff Pehrson have been added as backup singers. Four months after Jerry Garcia’s death in August of 1995, the Grateful Dead broke up; however, the members of the band have continued to play the music of the Grateful Dead in a number of different groups. Weir and Lesh infrequently played with one another until they played together in The Dead, which toured in 2009 and decided to form Furthur in August of that year. The group is named after the destination placard placed on Ken Kesey’s bus, which he used to tour around the country with his Merry Pranksters. Just like the Grateful Dead, Furthur uses the presale mail order system GDTS TOO.
The group made their debut at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, California in September of 2009. After touring lightly in 2009, the band capped off the year by playing two New Year’s shows in Mill Valley and San Francisco, California. In 2010, the band played more than 60 shows including performances at the Nateva Music and Camping Festival, the All Good Music Festival, and the Gathering of the Vibes festival. After making the groups first appearance at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre in September, the band played their final shows of the fall at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York, New York.
In 2011, the band toured heavily, playing lengthy residencies at a number of venues including the Best Buy Theater in New York, the Tower Theater outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and at the Odeum Colorado in February. In the summer, the band began in their home territory of northern California, playing at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California before embarking on a mostly east-coast tour. The band closed out 2011 with three nights at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California. In 2012, the band played a very short spring tour, consisting of only three venues, the Wang Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts, the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, and eight nights at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, New York. The band once again capped off the year at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California.
