Jethro Tull History

Jethro Tull's brand of theatrical progressive rock is earthshaking. This band has swept the rock world by storm since the 1960s. Tickets to Jetrho Tull concerts appeal to many types of people young and old. Their live show is dramatic and invigorating. They mix hard rock with other genres to create a wonderfully cerebral experience.

The oldest original member of the band is Ian Anderson, who is the singer, songwriter, flute player, and guitarist. The other two current band members are Martin Barre (electric guitar) and Dave Pegg (bass). Jethro Tull, the name of an 18th century Englishman with a niche in history as the inventor of a machine to plant seeds, was not always the name of the group. They changed names often to be able to play clubs more than once during their growing years. They settled finally on Jethro Tull after being invited back to play at a club for the first time in their careers.

Controversy surrounded the band in 1989 when they won the first Best Heavy Metal Performance Grammy ever given over the hot new band Metallica. The award, for the album 'Crest of a Knave,' spurred the Grammy Awards people to split the category into two awards, one for heavy metal and one for hard rock, in following years. Their most popular album, 'Aqualung,' hit the top of the charts in England and in the US.

Jethro Tull still puts out albums on a frequent basis today. Their appeal to lovers of blues and folk music is strongest at their live shows, where they are able to showcase the fine musicianship they are known for. The subject matter of Ian Anderson's songs is thick with thought-provoking ideals and quirky themes. Buy tickets to Jethro Tull's concert to see these legends in person.
