The oldest original member of the band is Ian Anderson, who is the singer, songwriter, flute player, and guitarist. The other two current band members are Martin Barre (electric guitar) and Dave Pegg (bass). Jethro Tull, the name of an 18th century Englishman with a niche in history as the inventor of a machine to plant seeds, was not always the name of the group. They changed names often to be able to play clubs more than once during their growing years. They settled finally on Jethro Tull after being invited back to play at a club for the first time in their careers.

Controversy surrounded the band in 1989 when they won the first Best Heavy Metal Performance Grammy ever given over the hot new band Metallica. The award, for the album 'Crest of a Knave,' spurred the Grammy Awards people to split the category into two awards, one for heavy metal and one for hard rock, in following years. Their most popular album, 'Aqualung,' hit the top of the charts in England and in the US.
