Loverboy History

Loverboy has scored three multi-platinum albums and is considered the most triumphant hard rock band of Canada from the 1980s. The band is made up of Mike Reno on vocals, Paul Dean on guitar, Scott Smith on bass, Doug Johnson on keyboard, and Matthew Frenette on drums. The band met and joined together in Toronto, signing with CBS Records. Within a year, they made their debut with singles 'Turn Me Loose,' 'Prissy, Prissy,' and 'The Kid is Hot Tonight.' Their album went platinum throughout most of North America.

The follow-up, Get Lucky, was released in 1981 with hits 'Working for the Weekend,' 'Lucky Ones,' 'Jump,' and 'When It's Over.' It drove the band up the charts once again. Their 1983 release, Keep It Up, featured more hit singles, with 'Queen of the Broken Hearts' and 'Hot Girls In Love'. Lovin' Every Minute of It was released two years later, went platinum, and landed them as one of the top five grossing touring acts. They received Columbia's Crystal Glove Award for selling over five million albums outside of Canada. A few singles were more on the pop side, such as 'Steal the Thunder,' 'Loving Every Minute of It,' and 'Dangerous'. Then, in 1987, they worked with Bon Jovi to make Wildside, with hits 'Notorious' and 'Break It To Me,' following with a tour spanning two years. A few years later, working from home in Canada, they released Big Ones, which was their best album yet.

The group split up, and Smith became a deejay for CFOX in Vancouver, while Johnson wrote television and radio soundtracks. However, in 1992 they reunited and joined Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, and other artists to help raise money for their long time friend who was diagnosed with cancer. The group decided to stick together, and they released Temperature's Rising and Loverboy Classics in 1994. In 1997 they compiled Super Hits, including hit singles 'Big Picture,' 'Waiting For the Night,' and 'Secrets.' Live, Loud, and Loose followed in 2001. Their successes were temporarily overshadowed by the tragedy of Smith's death, when he drowned near the California coast, but Loverboy rose again and now tours all over North America, with new bassist Kenny Sinneave.
