Hailing from Florida, Rob Thomas (vocals), Kyle Cook (guitar), Adam Gaynor (guitar), Brian Yale (bass), and Paul Doucette (drums) joined together in early 1996 to form Matchbox 20. After forming, the band toured and released demo tapes to many labels before being picked up by a subsidiary of Atlantic Records.

Matchbox Twenty's first album, Yourself or Someone Like You, contained commercial hits like '3AM' and 'Push.' The strength of the singles as well as unreleased album tracks like 'Back 2 Good' and 'Real World' helped their debut album sell more than 10 million copies.

Before moving on to their next album, Rob Thomas took some time off to write and provide vocals for Santana's Grammy winning album, Supernatural. The gritty vocals for 'Smooth' provided by Thomas along with Santana's trademark psychedelic and contemplative guitar style helped Carlos Santana make his new millennium comeback.

2000 brought Mad Season and a huge worldwide tour. Rather than copying their hit style from their first album, the group branched out and incorporated new riffs and deeper vocals. Much of this CD dealt with relationships, as shown by the songs 'Bent,' 'Bed of Lies,' and 'If You're Gone.' The group toured for almost two years before settling down to write and produce their next CD, More Than You Think You Are, which was released in 2002.

More Than You Think You Are continued Matchbox Twenty's growth. The first single, 'Unwell,' became an instant radio hit thanks in part to its catchy tune. The next single, 'Disease,' which was co-produced with Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones), shows that the band can incorporate other styles and still keep their own rock and roll beat.
