American heavy metal band Motley Crue, shot to fame in the 1980s and 1990s and are still considered by many as one of the biggest heavy metal bans of their time. The group was extremely successful during the heavy metal and hair band movement of the 1980s. The native Los Angeles group first formed in 1981 under the guidance of bass guitarist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee. The band started getting recognition both in the pop and rock worlds because they had a sound all their own. Once the band achieved their first taste of commercial success with their debut album, they became one of the most popular heavy metal bands in the industry. In fact, Motley Crue was ranked in MTV’s list of “Top 10 Heavy Metal Bands of All Time.”
The group is known for their over-the-top and larger than life performances, and for their hedonistic lifestyles often brought to life on stage. Their over-the-top antics have not only made Motley Crue one of the most popular heavy metal bands to see live, but they have made them one of the best selling heavy metal bands of all time as well. The group has sold more than 75 million albums across the globe. In fact, in 2012, the group proved that they still had what it takes to sell records when their album Saints of Los Angeles was certified Gold nearly 30 years after their first record hit the charts.
The band toured with many other big name groups and received a great deal of fan attention and critical acclaim for their heavy metal style. However, despite their success the group has revealed plans to officially retire from the music industry. In 2014, the group announced plans for a massive farewell tour. This big live concert event will take the rockers around the globe to some of the biggest arenas in the world. The band is currently on tour for the outing and will stay on the road throughout 2014 until they wrap up their performances for good and say goodbye to the rock industry in 2015.
