Primus

2014 Primus

Primus is a musical trio led by bassist and vocalist Les Claypool. Les had been auditioning for bands for years before he decided to start his own. Despite the fact that he had been writing his own music, Les had always been too afraid to sing them himself. No one else could sing his lyrics the way he wanted, though, so he finally gave in and decided to start a band. His friend, Todd Huth, agreed to be guitarist, and the band Primate was born. The name was soon changed to Primus to avoid legal issues.

In 1984, Primus made its first demo tape but received little in the way of rewards. However, it was played over the radio, and the fan base was there. Despite this fact, Todd Huth left to raise a family, and Les was forced to rebuild his band. Les recruited guitarist Larry LaLonde to replace Todd and Tim 'Herb' Alexander to play drums.

Primus's first album was recorded independently in 1989. It was recorded live in a club in two days. Regardless of its grassroots origins, SUCK ON THIS quickly became a favorite for college radio stations and was re-released by Caroline Records. The profits from this record went to recording a new album, FRIZZLE FRY.

Interscope Records began to hear a lot of the new band and wanted to hear them play. The company liked what they heard and signed a recording contract with Primus. The result was their third album, SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE. To promote their album, the band toured, opening for U2 concerts that sold out tickets.

Their next album, PORK SODA, hit the charts at number seven, within weeks of its release. Due to their popularity, Primus was offered a chance to headline at Lollapalooza 1993, a prestigious North American tour. That same year they sold out tickets, playing at the Reading Festival, the Lowlands Festival, and Pukkelpop. However, their biggest performance yet was in 1994 when Primus was invited to play at Woodstock.

Primus followed up these concerts with their next album, TALES FROM THE PUNCHBOWL. It climbed to number 8 on the billboard charts and all was going well for the band. However, drummer Tim Alexander felt that it was time to go his own way. Brian 'Brain' Mantia was recruited to replace Alexander for Primus's next album, THE BROWN ALBUM. It was followed by ANTI-POP in 1999 and ANIMALS SHOULD NOT TRY TO ACT LIKE PEOPLE in 2003.

In between recordings, Primus has toured around Europe, Japan, and the United States with bands like Blink 182, Black Sabbath, and Limp Bizkit. They have played at Ozzfest, headlined on the Sno-Core tour, and performed at the H.O.R.D.E. tour. They have a unique sound that is a blend between rock, metal, and punk. With elaborate rhythms and showmanship, Primus's music exhibits influences from Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, but they have a sound that is distinctively their own. Primus has even been nominated for a Grammy for their song 'Wynona's Big Brown Beaver,' and their other hit singles include 'My Name Is Mud,' 'Jerry is a Race Car Driver,' and 'Tommy the Cat.'
