Primus is a musical trio led by bassist and vocalist Les Claypool. Les had been auditioning for bands for years before he decided to start his own. Despite the fact that he had been writing his own music, Les had always been too afraid to sing them himself. No one else could sing his lyrics the way he wanted, though, so he finally gave in and decided to start a band. His friend, Todd Huth, agreed to be guitarist, and the band Primate was born. The name was soon changed to Primus to avoid legal issues.

In 1984, Primus made its first demo tape but received little in the way of rewards. However, it was played over the radio, and the fan base was there. Despite this fact, Todd Huth left to raise a family, and Les was forced to rebuild his band. Les recruited guitarist Larry LaLonde to replace Todd and Tim 'Herb' Alexander to play drums.
Primus's first album was recorded independently in 1989. It was recorded live in a club in two days. Regardless of its grassroots origins, SUCK ON THIS quickly became a favorite for college radio stations and was re-released by Caroline Records. The profits from this record went to recording a new album, FRIZZLE FRY.
Interscope Records began to hear a lot of the new band and wanted to hear them play. The company liked what they heard and signed a recording contract with Primus. The result was their third album, SAILING THE SEAS OF CHEESE. To promote their album, the band toured, opening for U2 concerts that sold out tickets.
