Shania's singing career began in her small, rural hometown of Timmins, Ontario. At a young age her parents would have her frequently perform around town, often pulling her out of bed around one in the morning to sing at local bars, since as a child she could only appear in the clubs after they had stopped serving alcohol. In addition to bars, she sang on local radio and television stations and at community events.
After signing with Mercury Nashville, Shania launched her debut album Shania Twain, in 1993. Although it wasn't a major hit, it performed respectably in the United States, launching two minor hit singles, 'What Made You Say That' and 'Dance With The One That Brought You'. The album was more successful in Europe with Country Music Television Europe naming her Rising Video Star of the Year.
Shortly after her debut album, Shania met and fell in love with a record producer, Robert John 'Mutt' Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard, Foreigner, the Cars). By the end of the year, the two had married and began work on her second album.
The Woman in Me was released in the spring of 1995. Selling over 9 million copies in America alone, it broke the record for the most weeks spent at number one on the country charts.
Come On Over followed in 1997 selling 36 million copies. Following this album, Twain took a sabbatical and returned to her Swiss home to spend time with her husband. During this time she brainstormed for a fourth album which resulted in Up!, and appeared in November of 2002.
Twain was the big winner at the 2003 Canadian Country Music Awards, taking home four awards; Female Artist, CMT Video, Top Selling Album, and Album of the Year. She will be touring in America and the United Kingdom this fall.
