Stevie Nicks History

A lot of obscure bands serve as stepping stones for future solo stars. Less often, hugely popular groups share one member's unique talents with the public. That is how the legendary band Fleetwood Mac begat the spectacular solo career of Stevie Nicks, she of the immediately recognizable voice and the magical mystique. Apart from her success with Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks has managed to sell millions of albums and tons of tickets on her own.

A Phoenix native, Stephanie Nicks performed in her parents' bar at an early age (it was the early Fifties) and began writing songs in her early teens. She met Lindsey Buckingham in high school in California, and their band got some great opening gigs around 1970. When that band broke up, Nicks and Buckingham recorded an album on whose cover they appeared naked. Had Buckingham stayed off the cover, the album might have been a hit, but it flopped.

Fleetwood Mac came calling, though, and Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham contributed to the group's two most popular albums, Fleetwood Mac (1975) and Rumours (1977), which held the distinction of being the all-time best-selling album for a number of years. Nicks's solo work got off to a good start in 1981 with two Top Ten duets, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Leather and Lace with Don Henley.

A winner of a Grammy for her work on Rumours, Stevie Nicks has always been an incredible concert draw, all the way back to her time opening for Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. With a wealth of familiar songs to sing, as well as her newer material, Stevie Nicks continues to command the attention of her legion of fans. If you want tickets to see her, you had better get moving!
