Only Van Halen has come close to laying claim to the title of "the next Led Zeppelin." After more than 20 years of selling millions of albums, enduring various lineup changes and solo projects and playing sold-out concert halls, Van Halen is recognized as one of the most successful rock bands to emerge from the 1970s.
Eddie and Alex Van Halen were raised in Pasadena, the children of Dutch immigrants who came to California in 1967. The brothers grew up taking classical piano lessons, but switched to guitar (Eddie) and drums (Alex) as teenagers. In 1974 while gigging around town with their band Mammoth they hooked up with vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony. Within a few years, they had become one of the more popular groups in Los Angeles. Fans packed L.A. rock clubs to check out Roth's over-the-top showmanship and Eddie's unconventional guitar riffs.
Their debut album, 'Van Halen,' was released in 1978 after Kiss bassist Gene Simmons noticed them at a local club and financed a recording session for the band. The debut album included the hit singles "Runnin' With the Devil" and a cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me." Eddie Van Halen took electric guitar technique to new heights, in turn making himself a legend with his patented two-handed tapping and pull-off effects. At the same time Roth proved to be a refreshing alternative in an industry full of self-important rock stars. Within six months of its release, 'Van Halen' was certified platinum.
During the next few years, Van Halen became known as one of the hardest working and most profitable bands in the music industry, releasing a string of multi-platinum albums four years in a row, 1979's 'Van Halen II', 1980's 'Women and Children First', 1981's 'Fair Warning' and 1982's 'Diver Down'. It was the album '1984', released on New Year's Day of that year, that solidified the band's superstar status. The album contained the hits "Jump," "Panama" and "Hot For Teacher," which seemed to get continuous airplay on the radio and MTV alike.
In 1985 Roth left the band to pursue a solo career and was promptly replaced by Sammy Hagar. Despite the idea that Hagar would not be able to fill the shoes of Roth, the band went on to record several successful albums with Hagar, whose tenure with the band ended up outlasting Roth's. 1986's '5150' produced the hit "Why Can't This Be Love" and 1991's 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' spawned the MTV favorite "Right Now." In 1993 the band released its first double-live album, 'Van Halen Live: Right Here, Right Now' which is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded.
By the mid-'90s, tensions between Eddie and Hagar began to surface and 1995's 'Balance' proved to be Hagar's swansong with the band. Shortly after Hagar left, David Lee Roth returned for a much-hyped Van Halen reunion. The reunion was short-lived as Roth parted ways with his former band mates again after recording two songs for 1996's greatest hits album, 'Best of Van Halen Vol. 1' and making an appearance with the band on the MTV Music Awards. Shortly after Gary Cherone was recruited as the third lead singer of Van Halen and a new album, aptly titled 'Van Halen III', was released in the spring of 1998. Cherone left the band in 1999 and had not been replaced by the time they parted ways with Warner in January of 2002. Early in 2004 the band announced they would be doing a summer tour in the U.S. and Sammy Hagar was back to lead the way.
