The music of Wilco is a perfect fusion of country and rock. Their sound has folk elements to it as well. Wilco's heartfelt lyrics and use of a wide array of stringed instruments gives their music depth and a soothing feel. This is a band that you must see live to truly appreciate. If you haven't seen them yet you will want to get tickets to a Wilco concert.
Wilco is made up of Jeff Tweedy (singer/songwriter), Ken Coomer (drums), John Stirratt (bass), Max Johnston (mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and lap steel), and Jay Bennett (guitars). (Tweedy, Coomer, Stirratt and Johnston had previously played together in the groundbreaking Uncle Tupelo, before parting ways in 1994 with Jay Farrar and Michael Heidorn, who moved in a different creative direction with the formation of Son Volt.)
Wilco's first album was A.M., an assortment of wistful country-rock melodies released in 1995. They went on to put out four more albums, topping it all off in 2004 with A Ghost is Born which reached number eight on the Billboard Charts.
Their sound changed a lot over the years, showing that this band has influences outside their country origins. Delving into soul, jazz and even psychedelic rock, Wilco has created an original sound that has captured the attention of a wide variety of fans and musicians. Wilco was even approached to put modern music to a collection of Woody Guthrie's unpublished songs in 1998. The resulting album, Mermaid Avenue, won a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
The one thing that has never changed over the years is Wilco's live performance. It has remained their finest talent and primary draw. They really move the audience with earnest songs like 'A Shot in the Arm,' 'Box Full of Letters,' 'Can't Stand It' and 'Misunderstood.' So if you are a fan of any style of music you are sure to want tickets to see Wilco in concert. They are professionals at fusing different techniques and instruments together into a cohesive and hypnotic sound.
