The Globetrotters were invented in Chicago by Abe Saperstein in 1927. They were originally a serious professional basketball team playing the leading teams and winning. They gradually moved into learning the comic routines and the Globetrotters became better known for their crazy skills and signature tricks than for being a serious competitive team. The Globetrotters perfected stunts like spinning a basketball on a finger and juggling multiple balls between players to show off their skill and coordination.

There have been some very famous Harlem Globetrotters who went on to outstanding careers in the NBA, for example, Wilt Chamberlain and Connie 'the Hawk' Hawkins. They lost another player to Major League Baseball: Hall of Famer Bob Gibson. Others, like Reece 'Goose' Tatum and George 'Meadowlark' Lemon, remain best known and loved for taking the special role of 'Clown Prince' with the Globetrotters.
