Anything Goes is a musical with the music and lyrics written by Cole Porter. The musical is based off the book of the same name, written by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse. The musical tells the story of a love triangle aboard a boat from New York to London.
The show originally debuted in 1934 on Broadway at what is now known as the Neil Simon Theatre. Subsequent versions have included the 1935 production in London’s West End, the 1936 Film version, and the 1954 Television version as well as many other revivals and remakes, either on stage or screen.
Just a few weeks before the show was due to open, a fire on the SS Morro Castle, which killed over one hundred passengers and crew aboard the ship, caused a series of rewrites to the play. Originally, the play featured a bomb threat, and an ensuing shipwreck, leaving the characters to their shenanigans on a desert island as opposed to the ship. Due to the real fire aboard a ship, this plot was abandoned in favor of the new plot, which features all of the hijinks aboard the ship itself.
Starting on November 21, 1934, the play ran for 420 performances. This was the fourth longest run of a play during the 1930s as the Great Depression had a severe impact on theatergoers. In the West End production of the show, the script was changed slightly to accommodate British audiences as some of the American references were swapped out for British ones. In 1987, the play was revived on Broadway and was nominated for ten Tony Awards, winning three-Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actor, and Best Choreography. In 2011, the play was revived once again, and received nine Tony Award nominations, taking home three – Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actress, and Best Choreography.
In addition to the theatrical versions, the there have been two film versions created. In 1936, the first version featured Ethel Merman, reprising her role from the theatrical version, as well as Bing Crosby. In the 1956 version, they made a number of drastic rewrites and altered the songs from being purely Cole Porter penned tunes to a mix of songs with some of Porter’s music as well as new contributions from Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn.
