Bombay Dreams

2014 Bombay Dreams

Bombay Dreams is a musical that was inspired by India's growing movie industry, commonly referred to by Americans as Bollywood. India has had the largest film industry in the world since 1998 and produces an average of 800 movies every year. These Indian films are particularly known for their musical numbers. Many of these films top the British box office charts for ticket sales. Andrew Lloyd Weber saw his first Indian film in the 1980s and, above all, was captured by its style of music. At that point he knew that he wanted to produce a play in the same style. Over a decade later, Bombay Dreams was the result.

Bombay Dreams was produced by Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber in 2002. He recruited the famous Indian musician, R. A. Rahman to write the music. Rahman has sold over 200 million albums, received many accolades, and collaborated with artists like David Byrne, Dominic Miller, and Michael Jackson. The script of Bombay Dreams was written by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan, and the lyrics are by Don Black. Bombay Dreams first opened at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre on June 19, 2002. On June 19, 2003, a year after it's opening, almost one million tickets had been sold to audiences. A year later, the musical began playing on Broadway, opening at the Broadway Theatre in New York City in April 2004.

Bombay Dreams is the story of a handsome young Bombay tour guide, Akaash, who dreams of becoming a big movie star in India's growing film industry. Akaash comes from the slums of Bombay but, one fateful day, Akaash meets Priya, who is the daughter of one of Bollywood's greatest film directors. It is a love story set against the background of the Indian film industry. The musical explores the themes of love, cultural heritage, and the power success has on some one. The Broadway production features Manu Narayan as Akaash, Anisha Nagarajan as Priya, and Madhur Jaffrey.

The London production of Bombay Dreams has won the 2003 Emma Award for Best Play/Theatre Production. The Emma Awards honor multicultural media events and personalities. Bombay Dreams was also nominated for the 2003 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best New Musical and Best Costume Design. The Laurence Olivier Awards are the most prestigious awards for theater in the UK.

Bombay Dreams is one of Andrew Lloyd Weber's most spectacular productions. Both the set and the costumes for the musical are glamorous, with an array of colors. The set is complete with a fully-operating fountain. Although the production is still relatively new, it has received numerous awards from critics in the United States and Great Britain. Bombay Dreams was truly written and produced in the style of a Bollywood film, complete with award-winning Indian music.
