Quidam is the ninth stage show produced by Cirque du Soleil. The show premiered in April of 1996 and has since been seen by millions of people. The show originated as a big top show; however, it has since been converted into an Arena show. The show was written and is directed by Franco Dragone. The costumes were designed by Dominique Lemieux, and the sets were designed by Michel Crete. The choreography was done by Debra Brown. Benoit Jutras composed the music for the show. The show has won two awards in its history, a 1995 Gold Medal at the Festival du Cirque de Demain and the 1999 Golden Clown at the International Monte Carlo Circus Festival.The show tells the story of a bored young girl named Zoe. Zoe is ignored by her parents, and creates the magical world of Quidam as a means of escaping her life. The title of the show refers to the main character. The show is comprised of more than 50 acrobats, musicians, singers, and characters. The main characters in the show include Zoe, Quidam, and John, who is the guide through the world of Quidam. The costumes for the show are extremely complex and varied as each character has anywhere from two to seven costumes with spares for each. The acts in the show vary, as a number of circus-type acts are included as well as some of the more acrobatic moves including banquine, an Italian acrobatic tradition that combines gymnastics and ballet.The show originated in Montreal, Quebec as a Grand Chapiteau touring show. The show made its first stop in the United States in Santa Monica, California in September of 1996. In 1999, the show traveled to Europe for the first time, spending three years in Europe before returning to North America in 2002. The show traveled the Asia for the first time in 2003, setting up shop in four different Japanese cities beginning in Tokyo in February of 2003. 2004 saw the show’s first performances in Oceania, making its first appearances on the continent in Sydney in August 2004. The show made its South American debut in 2009. In 2009, the show converted to its present Arena format, where it has traveled across Europe and North America.
