Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde History

The famed novella, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson, got a remake unlike any other in 1990 when this classic tale was re-created into a musical production named simply “Jekyll and Hyde.” The production first debuted in 1990 at the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas. The production garnered a great deal of success in the Houston market and stayed at the Alley theater for five years before making a brief stay in Seattle and then hitting the road for a US nation-wide tour.

The musical took the mysterious tale of Jekyll and Hyde and brought it to life in a completely new way adding new character developments, exciting costumes and stage effects and a stunning soundtrack, peppered with moving musical numbers. The production was unlike any other in the theatrical world at the time thanks to its mix of suspense, horror, mystery and beautiful music. This success eventually lead “Jekyll and Hyde” to the Broadway stage. After its successful nation-wide tour following its Houston stay, the production opened on Broadway at the Plymouth Theatre in 1997. The play stayed on the Broadway stage for four years, finally closing in 2011. During this time, big names such as Christiane Noll, Rob Evan, Emily Skinner, Sebastian Bach and David Hasselhoff all appeared in the roll. After ending in 2001, the play took a break before getting an exciting new revival in 2012 that aimed to bring the play and the story back to Broadway.

When the 2012 version of “Jekyll and Hyde” was announced it was also revealed the Broadway star and R&B artist Deborah Cox would be taking on a role after the tour version of the production stopped and after the show found its way to the Broadway stage in 2013. The new version of the production is set to bring together a strong, musically-inclined cast for this latest Broadway stint and will also feature pop singer and American Idol finalist Constantine Maroulis in one of the leading roles. The 2013 production is slated to begin in April of 2013 as a limited engagement and is hoping to bring this one-of-a-kind story to a whole new set of fans as this classic tale is brought back to life and back to the stage.
