Flashdance The Musical is a stage adaptation of the 1983 movie, Flashdance. Robbie Roth did the music for the show, and Robbie Roth and Robert Cary did the lyrics for the show. Tom Hadley and Robert Cary wrote the book for the play. The show premiered in July of 2008 at the Theatre Royal Plymouth. The show then went on a tour of the United Kingdom through 2009.
In 2010, the show began its run at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London’s West End. The production of the show was produced by David Ian, directed by Nikolai Foster, and choreographed by Arlene Phillips, using the same book, music, and lyrics as the previous production. The show used sixteen original songs, to go along with five songs from the 1983 film.
The production of the show got off to a rocky start when previews for the show were delayed by a day to sort out technical difficulties. The show began its run on September 25, 2010 with Victoria Hamilton-Barritt as Alex Owens, Noel Sullivan as Nick Hurley, Bernie Nolan as Hannah Owens, and Bruno Langley as Jimmy Kaminsky. The show ended its run on January 15, 2011, a bit earlier than expected.
In 2013, the show made its first appearance in the United States. The show’s first stop was at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall. Pittsburgh is the location where the show itself is set. The show is set for a tour, which takes it from coast to coast in the United States. The show spends a week in a number of cities; however, the performance makes an extended stay at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
After taking a week off at the end of March, the tour picks back up in Minneapolis before heading to the west coast. The show closes its tour by spending two weeks in Costa Mesa, California before taking a couple weeks off and heading to Texas for the month of June, spending two weeks in Houston, one week in San Antonio, and closing its tour with two weeks in Dallas at the Music Hall. The show is scheduled to make its Broadway debut in August.
