The musical production of The Lion King is a one of a kind live performance based on the hit 1994 Disney animated film. The show features original songs written from Elton John and Tim Rice along with a new musical score designed to bring this unique play to life. Although there are a number of distinguishing features about this live production; one of the most notable is the actors used to portray the characters in this tale. Since all of the characters are animals the musical features actors in animal costumes as well as giant hollow puppets used to tell the story.
Just as the original Disney movie does, the play follows the story of Simba and his struggles to find his place in his world after the death of his father Mufasa. The story follows the same tale and all of the same beloved characters most of which are portrayed by real actors. There are some main characters however such as Timon and Pumbaa that are portrayed using puppets. Big name performers such as Jason Raize, John Vickery, Rob Edwards and Samuel E. Wright have taken on the roles of this story and brought these characters to life. The original Broadway cast also released a recording of the songs in a wildly popular album in 1997. The play has won several Tony Awards, A Theatre World Award and numerous Drama Desk Awards as well.
The musical, which is produced by Disney Theatrical first debuted in 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The play got rave reviews and found instant success among fans. The play quickly premiered on Broadway just a few weeks later at the New Amsterdam Theatre before finding its permanent home at the Minskoff Theatre. The show has done more than 5,300 performances and is currently the fifth-longest running show in the history of Broadway. However, even after years on the Broadway stage, theatre goers shouldn’t expect this performance to stop any time soon. In 2012, the play broke records by becoming the highest grossing Broadway show of all time. Fortunately, due to the popularity of the production, fans can still catch the show live on the Broadway stage or they can choose to view the Lion King in one of its many productions when the show tours around the globe.
