Sec Championship History

The SEC Championship Game is the name for the official college football game held every year to determine the winner of the Southeastern Conference. The winner of the game is deemed the season champion for the conference and is held after the regular season of play has come to an end. Every year this game will place a representative from the SEC Western Division against a representative from the SEC Eastern Division in a game that has been notoriously engaging and has featured a number of close match ups. The game has had twenty different meetings over the past decade with the first event held in 1992. This year the SEC became the first conference in the NCAA Division I football program to hold a conference championship game of this type.During the history of this game nine of the 14 current members of the SEC conference have played in the SEC Championship Game. To date, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Missouri have never been in the game. Only six of the nine teams to have ever played in the SEC Championship game have come out victorious. Past winners include LSU, Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. As of the 2012 season the Eastern Division currently has more wins than the Western with the overall record being 11-9. As of the 2012 season the most recent winner of the SEC matchup was the LSU Tigers. To date, the Florida Gators have won this game more than any other team in the conference with seven wins; they have appeared in the game ten times. The event was originally held in Birmingham, Alabama during its first two years at the Legion Field. However, in 1994 it moved to the massive Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA to help accommodate the large number of fans that typically attend the game. Now the game is held in the massive stadium every year, and despite being held in one of the largest stadiums in one of the largest cities in the South, the game is known for always selling out and selling out quickly. Typically more than 75,000 fans will pack the stadium in order to see a battle between the top two teams of what is often considered one of the best conferences in the league, battle it out for the coveted title of SEC champion.
