Steve Lawrence History

Steve Lawrence is one of the finest vocalists in the entertainment industry today. Along with his wife, Eydie Gorme, Steve has been performing since the 1950s as an actor and singer. Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme have delighted audiences for decades, selling thousands of tickets on their North American tours, even performing with the legendaryr Frank Sinatra on the Diamond Jubilee Tour.

In 1935, Steve Lawrence was born Sidney Liebowitz to a cantor in Brooklyn, New York. He studied piano, saxophone, and singing for years. In high school, he began to study composing and music arrangement. He started writing his own songs at the age of 16.

Steve Lawrence was not well-known until the 1950s, when he became a regular on the original Tonight Show with Steve Allen. That is where he met his wife, Eydie Gorme. The two decided to combine their efforts and toured together after their marriage in 1957. However, in 1958, Steve left to serve in the Army, and their plans were put on hold. Upon his return home in 1960, the couple again took up performing and have been touring as a duo ever since.

Both their dedication and excellence have been rewarded by music critics. In 1995, Steve and Eydie received the Ella Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Singers. They received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Songwriters' Hall of Fame and a Grammy for their album We've Got Us. They received seven Emmys for their television special Steve and Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin and two for their television tribute to the Gershwins. Steve and Eydie also received an Award of Excellence from the Film Advisory Board for their homage to Cole Porter. As regulars on the Las Vegas scene, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme have been hot tickets for years playing the Sands Hotel, Desert Inn Hotel, and Caesar's Palace.

Along with their collaborative work, Steve and Eydie have both had successful solo careers. Eydie won a Grammy for her recording of If He Walked Into My Life. They have each had top hits with songs like Blame It On the Bossa Nova, The Banana Boat Song, Love Me Forever, Party Girl, and You Need Hands.

However, the couple's success has not been limited to the music industry. Steve often appeared on variety shows such as The Carol Burnett Show, The Tonight Show, The Julie Andrews Hour, and The Ed Sullivan Show. Steve's most notable performance was in the 1980 film, The Blues Brothers, where Lawrence played character Maury Sline. He also appeared in the sequel in 2000. Steve has received a Tony nomination and the New York Drama Critics Award for his Broadway debut in What Makes Sammy Run. Both Steve and Eydie appeared in the Broadway musical 'Golden Rainbow.'

In 2004, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme announced their One More for the Road tour. The tour included the Westbury Music Fair, and Westbury, New York, remains a favorite venue, along with the Stardust Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Even after a half-century of performing, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme are still going strong. They have received acclaim from critics, colleagues, and audiences. When they are on stage, the couple captivates their audiences with witty dialogue as well as their musical talent. People are still purchasing tickets to see this musical duo after many years of performing.
