Candlebox is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington that formed in 1990. The band was originally comprised of Kevin Martin on guitar and vocals and Scott Mercado on drums. The band quickly became a four-piece when they added Peter Klett on guitar and Bardi Martin in 1991. Currently, the band is comprised of Kevin Martin, Klett, and Mercado, as well as Sean Hennesy and Adam Kury.
In 1993, the band released their eponymous debut. The album sold more than four million copies and peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200. The album featured four singles, which cracked the US Mainstream Rock chart’s top-20, “Change,” “You,” “Cover Me,” and “Far Behind.” “Far Behind” peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was one of the most requested videos on MTV of 1993.
In 1995, the band released Lucy, the group’s second album. This album was more poorly received; however, the album was still certified gold by the RIAA. The album featured three singles, “Simple Lessons,” “Understanding,” and “Best Friend.” “Simple Lessons” and “Understanding” each cracked the top-20 of the US Mainstream Rock charts, with “Simple Lessons” reaching as high as number five.
In 1998, the band released their third album, Happy Pills. The album was poorly received by the press, and was the group’s first album without drummer Scott Mercado, who was replaced by formed Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen. The album featured three singles that made the top-20 on the US Mainstream Rock charts including “It’s Alright,” which peaked at number two on the chart. The album peaked at number 65 on the Billboard 200, and was their lowest charting album to date.
The band went on a seven-year hiatus in 2000, returning in 2006, and ten years after their third album, followed it up with 2008’s Into the Sun. The album did not reach the success of their first album; however, critics considerably more favorably reviewed it than their last two albums, peaking at number 32 on the Billboard 200. The album released its fifth and most recent album, Love Stories & Other Musings in 2012, and peaked at number 82 on the Billboard 200.
