The 2008-09 NFL season has just begun and there’s already been tons of excitement. Pats fans around the nation let out a collective sob during their season opening game against the Kansas City Chiefs, when Tom Brady sustained a knee injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season. It hasn’t all been bad news though – Brett Favre is officially out of retirement and playing for the New York Jets. And, since the Patriots were the favorites to win the 2009 Super Bowl before the Brady injury, his exit may well have changed the fortunes of teams throughout the league, not just his own.
Just a month into the season the Patriots have already lost one game, and other early favorites aren’t quite living up to expectations. In fact, none of the teams in the top five power rankings from the first week of the season are undefeated: the Chargers were number 2, but they’ve only won 2 of 5 games, the Cowboys were ranked 3rd but they’ve lost 1 of 4 games, the Colts were 4th but they’ve lost 2 of 4 games, and the Jaguars, who were ranked 5th, have lost 1 of their 4 games.
However, teams that started out with less than stellar odds are proving their critics wrong - the Tennessee Titans (ranked 14th) and last year’s Super Bowl winners the New York Giants (ranked 8th) are currently the only two undefeated teams, and the Atlanta Falcons, ranked dead last, have the same 3 to 2 record that the Chargers have! As the season heats up things will only get more exciting, and watching the game on TV just isn’t the same.
