Alabama Symphony Orchestra History

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra dates back to 1921; when fifty two musicians joined together to perform at a music festival in Birmingham. The Symphony Orchestra has managed to serve Alabama for more than 70 years now. ASO is seen to be an integral part of Alabama's cultural fabric. These phenomenal musicians are seen to have brought life to some of the best musical master pieces in the world. They have also introduced various listeners to exciting compositions and works that can only be described as outstanding.

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra has made it their soul purpose to change the lives of many through music. The group produces symphonic music that is of very high quality and extends educational programs while maintaining its own fiscal strength.  Alabama Symphony Orchestra played its first notes in September 11, 1997. This was done under the leadership of Gustav Meier. Since then the group has gone through some major rebirths and reorganization. One of the major changes was the integration of the ASO leadership.

The group has grown tremendously having 53 full-time musicians. In the year 1997 ASO only offered three special events and three concerts. ASO now follows a series of subscription which include Coffee Concerts, Wachovia Masterworks and AmSouth SuperPops all presented by BellSouth Real Pages. There are other series which include Red Diamond Family Concerts, Indian Springs Gateway and Concertmaster & Friends.  The Alabama Symphony Orchestra is now looking at the future with boundless of opportunities. It's planning to expand its programs and various activities in new exciting ways. Various leaders from various states have been incorporated for the purpose of seizing greater opportunities. Some of these states include Jefferson County, State of Alabama and Birmingham. There is a renewed commitment by ASO to continue broadening its main mission of making professional, symphonic music accessible to every resident of their state.
