With these performances Streisand became respected and sought after for work in film and television, while still being the number one female singer throughout the '60s and '70s. Her first starring film role was a 1968 adaptation of Funny Girl, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. From there she went on to do more comedies, musicals and dramas. Her directorial debut came in 1983 with the film Yentl, winning the Golden Globe for Best Director and Best Picture.

Over her 40-year singing career she has been consistently releasing albums and touring, though in recent years she hasn't been as prolific. Streisand has also used her fame to help boost The Streisand Foundation, which raises money for AIDS research, protection of the environment and many human rights causes. In 2005, she released a collaboration called Guilty Pleasures with former Bee Gee Barry Gibb, a follow-up to the 1980 album Guilty, and hinted at a final concert tour.
