William Broad, known by his stage name of Billy Idol, is a British rock musician. Idol grew up in Bromley in southeastern London, and joined the band Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1976. He quickly left the group to join the band Chelsea in 1977. Idol and Chelsea band mate Tony James left the group fairly quickly and formed their own group, Generation X, where Idol first moved into the lead singer role. Generation X went on to modest success, appearing on the BBC program Top of the Pops, and released three albums before disbanding in 1980.
Idol then moved to New York in 1981 and began his solo career. His solo career began with an EP entitled Don’t Stop, which featured the Generation X song “Dancing with Myself” and a cover of “Mony Mony.” In 1982, Idol released his debut solo album, eponymously titled Billy Idol. Idol’s success began to skyrocket as the music video for “White Wedding” became an early MTV staple and cemented Idol as one of the forerunners of the so-called “Second British Invasion.”
Idol’s second LP, Rebel Yell further placed Idol in the spotlight as it featured three highly charting singles, “Eyes Without a Face,” “Flesh For Fantasy,” and the title track, “Rebel Yell.” “Eyes Without a Face” fared remarkably well, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Rebel Yell” peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart. Idol finished out the 1980s with 1986’s Whiplash Smile which peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and number 8 on the UK Top Albums chart.
Since the 1980s and the peak of his fame, he has released four subsequent albums, 1990’s Charmed Life, which peaked at number 15 on the UK Top Albums chart, Cyberpunk in 1993, which peaked at number 20 on the UK Top Albums Chart, 2005’s Devil’s Playground, which peaked at number 46 on the Billboard 200, and most recently, 2006’s Happy Holidays.
Idol has been nominated for a number of awards. He has been nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards three separate times. In 1985, he was nominated for “Rebel Yell,” in 1987, he was nominated for “To Be a Lover,” and in 1991, he was nominated for “Cradle of Love.” Idol has also been nominated for ten MTV Video Music Awards, winning once in 1990 for Best Video from a Film for “Cradle of Love.”
