Current group members are Jon, born John Francis Bongiovi, who plays guitar, piano, and harmonica as well as handling the lead vocals; Richie Sambora on lead guitar, which also can be a twelve-string or a sitar; Tico Torres on drums and percussion; David Bryan on keyboards; and Hugh McDonald, unofficially subbing for original member Alec John Such, on bass guitar. Richie, David, and Hugh all contribute to the singing as well.

After Slippery When Wet (1986), New Jersey (1988), and Keeping the Faith (1992) went multi-platinum status around the world, critics and fans alike were eager to see if they could retain their fan base.
