Built to Spill is an American indie rock band from Boise, Idaho, formed in 1992. The band was originally made up of Doug Martsch, Brett Netson, and Ralf Youtz. Currently, the band is made up of Martsch and Netson, as well as Jim Roth, Steve Gere, and Jason Albertini.
The band released their first album in 1993, entitled Ultimate Alternative Wavers. Their next album, There’s Nothing Wrong with Love, released in 1994, was met with both a new lineup, featuring the trio of Martsch, bassist Brett Nelson, and drummer Andy Capps, and newfound success. The highly critically acclaimed album was ranked by Pitchfork as the #24 ranked album on its “Top 100 Albums of the 90’s” list. The singles “Car” and “Distopian Dream Girl” were released as singles, and achieved a moderate level of success.
After the release of the album, the band’s success skyrocketed, in conjunction with their appearances on the Lollapalooza tour of 1995. The band’s next album, 1997’s Perfect from Now On, was also highly critically acclaimed, as it was given a 9.2 out of 10 by Pitchfork and named their #22 ranked album on its “Top 100 Albums of the 90’s” list. The band’s fourth album continued their trend of releasing highly critically acclaimed albums with 1999’s Keep It Like a Secret. The album was ranked at #41 on Pitchfork’s “Top 100 Albums of the 90’s.”
The new millennium featured continued success for the band as 2001’s Ancient Melodies of the Future received four out of five stars from Rolling Stone. This album was the band’s last album for five years, as 2006’s You in Reverse featured a change in a lot of regards for the band. For the first time, the band did not use Phil Ek as a producer, and it was the first time the band recorded as a quartet. The album was not quite as well received as its predecessors; however, the album still did very well, charting as high as number 63 on the Billboard 200. The band’s most recent studio album, There is No Enemy, was the band’s highest charting album to date, peaking at number 50 on the Billboard 200.
