The Cure was originally a punk band and was first named Easy Cure. It was formed while Robert was still attending school in Southern England. Smith, Lol Tolhurst, and bassist Michael Dempsey met there and recorded their first album, Three Imaginary Boys, in 1979. By the time the band's name was changed to The Cure, they had a much heavier and darker sound than the ordinary punk bands of the day.
