Lead singer David Gahan, Vince Clarke, Andrew Fletcher and Martin Gore make up the band that became Depeche Mode in the early 1980s. Their first album, Speak and Spell, in 1981 was considered part of the New Wave movement in music. Depeche Mode has been a big part of the MTV scene throughout their career, making artfully complex and emotionally driven music videos to convey the deep and evocative message in the songs that were their subject matter.

Songs like 'Policy of Truth,' 'Personal Jesus' and 'People Are People' became the anthems of a generation and spawned many Depeche Mode-influenced bands that still pop up all over the world. Their 1990 record Violator is considered one of the finest works by an electro-pop band even today. Songs of Faith and Devotion, 1993, made it to number one on the Billboard charts as did a compilation of Depeche Mode songs called Remixes 81-04.
