'Welcome to the Jungle,' 'Paradise City' and later 'Patience' off their second release G N'R Lies, carried them to heights beyond most rock bands of the time because of their universal appeal to lovers of heavy metal, pop and ballad rock. The last song off the record, 'One in a Million,' was their most controversial piece and it sparked a lot of harsh protest from critics and fans alike for its foul, bigoted, violent subject matter. Guns N' Roses survived the upset, despite public clamor against Axl Rose's apparent misogynistic attitude and aggressive tendencies.

It is true that no press is bad press, and Guns N Roses continued to put out albums, tour and make music videos. Axl Rose and Guns N Roses shifted their musical focus and put out the more sensitive albums Use Your Illusion I and II in 1991. They featured artful ballad style melodies and soul-reflective lyrics. Since then GNR has released a number of records that met with similar success.
