Heaven and Hell was an English-American rock band. The group toured under the name Black Sabbath from 1980 to 1982 and again from 1991 to 1992. When they reformed in 2006, Tony Iommi named the group Heaven and Hell so as to differentiate themselves from the Ozzy Osbourne led incarnations of Black Sabbath. The band is comprised of Tony Iommi on guitars, Geezer Butler on bass, Vinny Appice on drums, and Ronnie James Dio on vocals. Each of the four members of the band were in Black Sabbath at one time or another.
The band came together in 2006 to release a project entitled Black Sabbath – The Dio Years. Though the album was released under the Black Sabbath name, the band embarked on a seven leg, 98 show tour that traversed the world. The band toured heavily in the United States, Canada, and in the United Kingdom, as well as toured across Europe, Asia, and Australia.
In 2007, the band announced that the tour was a one-off and they would each go back to their original projects; however, in 2008, the band left open the option to reform. In August of 2008, the band joined the Metal Masters Tour, which included other metal stalwarts including Judas Priest, Motörhead, and Testament.
In April of 2009, the band released The Devil You Know. The album was widely critically acclaimed, receiving four out of five stars on Allmusic. The album peaked at number 8 on the Billboard 200, and made the top-50 in nine different countries. The band then embarked on a tour from May through August, including stops at a number of high profile festivals across Europe. The band played their final performance of the tour in Atlantic City, New Jersey on August 29, 2009. That show would end up being the final public performance of Ronnie James Dio.
In November of 2009, Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Though the band planned to continue touring once Dio regained his health, those plans never came to fruition as Dio died on May 16. Heaven and Hell played their final performance with Glenn Hughes and Jørn Lande replacing Dio on July 24, 2010, as a tribute to Dio.
