Born in Mechanicsville, Virginia, Jason grew up as a fan of bands like the Dave Matthews Band and the Agents of Good Roots. Jason worked with drummer Toca Rivera (Djembe) to form a live show that mixed a lot of comedic chitchat between him and Toca with the music. These shows garnered Mraz a lot of attention from fans, other bands and labels.

The Agents of Good Roots eventually became the back-up band for his first album on Elektra Records, Waiting for My Rocket to Come. Released in 2002, this debut blended Jason's influences of country, roots rock and folk. His music even has hints of jazz and hip-hop, and all these are evident in songs like 'The Remedy,' 'I'll Do Anything' and 'On Love, In Sadness.'
