Mexican singer and songwriter Lila Downs was born on September 9, 1968. Her birth name is Ana Lila Downs Sanchez, and she usually performs her own compositions and Mexican traditional music. She is well known for recording songs in various indigenous languages, such as Mixtec, Mayan or Nahuatl, among others. Her first two albums, "Ofrenda" and "Traces", recorded on 1994 and 1997 respectively, were produced with very limited means, and distributed with nearly no marketing. The first one was never released in CD format, but a recording of a live show performing the tracks on that album was the one which started building up her popularity in the underground circles of Mexico.
On 1999 she signed up with the record label Naranda Productions and recorded the album "La Sandunga", which included some tracks from "Ofrenda". This album sold half a million copies worldwide and gave her international recognition, making her one of the first artists to mix traditional music with modern styles such as bolero, blues or jazz. Her next production, "Tree of Life", was recorded on 2000. Lila experimented with traditional pre-Hispanic instruments, exploring deeper into her indigenous roots. This album was a great commercial success, and led to a two months tour through Latin America, the USA and Europe. "Tree of Life" was followed by "Border", on 2001, where the singer wrote her first songs in English.
After 19 years, 9 full length albums, two live albums and a greatest hits compilation, Lila Downs has received one Latin Grammy award and one Grammy Award for her album "Pecados y Milagros" (2011) and a Grammy nomination for her album "Shake Away" (2008). She has performed some small roles in feature films such as "Frida", where she also sang the song "Burn it Blue", nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. She has also appeared in the documentary "Hasta el Ultimo Trago Corazon", about Mexican Music. Lila Downs is one of the most notorious exponents of modern Mexican music, recognized worldwide for her ability to mix traditional and modern music, being her indigenous origin and her use of native languages one of her most recognizable trademarks.
