2008 Shakira

Shakira is now world famous for her intensely sensual live performance that features her amazing voice and rhythmic belly dancing, but before she was a superstar on MTV and getting numerous award nominations, she had been in the business for 10 years recording exclusively in Spanish.

At the age of 14 Shakira released her first album, Magia (Magic), on Sony Records and became a success in her native country of Colombia. Peligro (Danger) was her next album but it wasn't until 1995 when she wrote and recorded the song '¿Dónde Estás Corazón?' that she was a commercial smash. That 1995 album, called Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet), included the hit 'Estoy Aquí,' and helped spread her name internationally.

Building on this exposure she undertook the recording of her most acclaimed record, ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones? (Where are the Thieves?), combining Latin pop with rock on the songs 'Ojos Así­' and 'Inevitable.' This album also led her to the release of an MTV Unplugged album with live versions of her many hits.

In 2002 Shakira released Laundry Service and took on the English-speaking music charts. This was an all-out rock album, with the single 'Whenever, Wherever,' one of the biggest songs of the year. She also released the DVD Shakira: Live and Off the Record, which celebrated her world tour and showed her talents to an even larger audience worldwide.

Shakira teamed up with Alejandro Sanz in 2005 on 'La Tortura' off of the album Fijación Oral Vol. 1 (Oral Fixation Volume 1), which was in Spanish and number one in nearly all of the Latin America countries. Another song off the album, 'La Amargura,' made the VH1 Top 20 Countdown and led to her being nominated for three MTV Video Music Awards. The same year she released another album called Oral Fixation Volume 2 and proved she had the talent and charm to win over everyone, including U.S. music fans.
