Willie was fascinated by various forms of music growing up but gravitated towards country as his writing talents matured. While a teen, Willie made money as a door-to-door sales man, playing honky-tonks and eventually landed his first job at a local radio station.
By his graduating year in high school he had his own radio show and, after spending a short period of time in the Air Force, Willie, a fresh-faced 23 year-old financed and recorded his first song 'No Place For Me'. By 1959 Willie had been married and divorced with two children. He worked full time as a country deejay for Fort Worth's KCNC and was writing songs in his spare time.
