There’s no substitute for the charge in the air right before the curtain goes up on a live theatrical performance. While some may think of a ticket as just a small, rectangular piece of cardboard that lets you know where your seat is, others know it’s actually a key to another world where anything can happen and nothing is ever dull. From tickets to smash Broadway hits like Jersey Boys and Wicked, to new, exciting performances of classics like South Pacific and La Bohème or visually stunning shows like Blue Man Group and Cirque Du Soleil, Coast to Coast has it all.
Since the beginning of recorded time, and probably before, mankind has had some form of live theater. Imagine watching Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare in the Globe while Shakespeare himself watches from the wings, or being at the Dionysia in ancient Greece and seeing Thespis (from which the word “thespian” was derived) perform. Even America's theatrical traditions span centuries and include legends – from Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire, Ethel Merman in Annie Get Your Gun and Helen Hayes in Victoria Regina, to more recent legends like Roger Bart and Megan Mullally in Young Frankenstein, Kendra Kassebaum in Wicked and John Lloyd Young in Jersey Boys.
Anyone who’s ever attended a live theatrical performance knows that it’s worlds away from going to the movies or watching TV. Without the safety that comes with recorded performances that can be shot, re-shot and edited before an audience ever sees it, the stakes are much higher in live theater, and unlike simply watching a show, the cast is able to interact with the audience and gauge the effectiveness of their performance by the audience’s reaction. There’s also the enticing possibility of something unexpected happening, like the star being unable to perform and an unknown understudy stepping in – and stealing the show!
