The Color Purple is a musical based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and the acclaimed Steven Spielberg movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover. It is the story of a family and their struggles and a mistreated woman who finds her own voice and speaks out. It is a tearful and joyful tale of success in the face of adversity and is set to a jazzy score that features jazz, ragtime, gospel and pure blues music. The show is produced in part by Oprah Winfrey who made her first movie debut in the cinematic version of The Color Purple, garnering a Best Actress in a Supporting Role nomination in the process. The Broadway play is directed by Gary Griffin.
